Our Approach

At Ilera Counselling & Therapy, we take a person-centered approach to therapy.

What does that mean?

This means our time together is mostly going to be led by you. I tend to start each
session by asking you questions along the lines of:

     ● “What is going on for you?”
     ● “What do you want to talk about?”
     ● “What do you want to work on today?”

You will be approached with empathy and kindness, leaving space for you to experience grace.

My role in your life is to be a guide in your journey of self-discovery.
I understand that people have different life struggles and I want to be there for you as
we untangle and work collaboratively to resolve these challenges.

I focus on presenting issues such as:

Life transitions - Going through life transitions can be tasking and emotionally exhausting. As your guide on this journey, we will tackle the struggles that comes with life transitioning. Be it moving to a new city, being a new university/college student, transitioning from being a student into the working world, and many more. We will work collaboratively to get you settled in your new state of life. With a tool kit to assist and help with furthermore development.

Bicultural identity- What does that mean to you? There are many people who migrated to Canada at young ages or born to parents who immigrated to Canada from a different culture. This scenario pose a difficult situations as we find ourselves caught between two worlds culturally, leading to conflict in cultural identities. We will collaborate as you navigate both cultures and discover who you are and how you fit in culturally.

Trauma - Trauma occurs on varying levels. Acute - one event that was traumatic. Complex - Traumatic events that occurred multiple times. Racial - Trauma that occurred with racial bias, ethnic discrimination, racism, and hate crimes.

Children at any age can experience trauma and are more likely than adults to have related long-term health problems such as diabetes and heart disease. Adults that go through traumatic events may have difficulty establishing fulfilling relationships and keeping a job. Those that experience trauma in their life may react with alcohol use and smoking, creating ongoing issues.

Ilera Counselling and Psychotherapy services works with you to avoid or overcome these kinds of negative behaviours by teaching you how to turn a dark experience into one of emotional lift and healing.
